Latin America is more than Machu Picchu, Rio de Janeiro and Cartagena.
Those names dominate every travel list, but behind the crowds and inflated prices hides a whole row of cities that offer everything the tourist icons promise and often more.
A travel account on X, run by @hispanicnomad, recently sparked a wave of reactions with a post about the most overlooked destinations in the region.
The results make you want to book a flight right away.
Colonial charm without the crowds
At the top of the list are Salta in Argentina, Cuenca in Ecuador and Sucre in Bolivia. Salta sits amid red rock canyons and vineyards, with colonial architecture and a food scene built around local wines and empanadas.
Cuenca in Ecuador earned its UNESCO status for a reason: flower markets, a riverside setting and a walkable centre that feels calmer and safer than the capital Quito. Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital, is known as the White City for its brilliant whitewashed buildings and relaxed pace.
Dinosaur footprints have been found nearby, and altitude sickness is a real factor at around 2,600 metres, so a day of rest after arrival is a smart move.
Mexico and Central America within easy reach
For those flying from the United States or the Caribbean, Mexico offers two standout options. Guanajuato is a riot of colourful buildings, underground tunnels and alleyways, with a famous mummy museum and the Cervantino arts festival drawing visitors every year.
Campeche, a walled colonial city on the Gulf coast, is quieter still and easy to combine with nearby beaches. In Guatemala, Antigua sits beneath active volcanoes with cobblestone streets and coffee culture that draws visitors who never want to leave.
What makes them worth it
All these cities share one thing: they are affordable, less crowded and more authentic than the spots that dominate social media.
Entry is visa-free for most Western passport holders, flights run between 300 and 800 dollars return, and daily costs stay well under 100 dollars. Shoulder season travel, basic Spanish and the Uber app go a long way.
