More Americans are packing their bags and starting a new chapter in Europe. New figures from Eurostat show that thousands of U.S. citizens received residence permits across the continent in 2024.
While Spain remains the number one choice, the Netherlands has quietly become one of the most popular destinations for Americans looking for work, study, or a different way of life.
The Netherlands Climbs the List
According to Eurostat, the Netherlands granted about 6,732 first residence permits to U.S. citizens in 2024. That places the country among Europe’s top destinations for Americans, behind Spain, France, and Germany.
Spain led the list with 15,638 permits, followed by France with 13,122 and Germany with 8,507. Italy rounded out the top five with 5,049 permits. The United Kingdom was not included in the figures because it no longer reports migration data through Eurostat after Brexit.
Why Americans Are Moving
There are many reasons behind the growing trend. Some Americans move for jobs, while others come to study, retire, or join family members. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work has also made it easier for people to live and work abroad.
Rising healthcare costs, concerns about work life balance, and political divisions in the United States are often mentioned as factors that encourage people to consider a move overseas.
Several European countries have also introduced visa programs aimed at attracting remote workers and skilled professionals.
A Trend Worth Watching
Experts note that these figures only cover first residence permits and do not show whether people stay permanently.
Some Americans may remain for only a few years.
